Examining the Underground Railroad throughout Southeastern Massachusetts
The UR committee’s goal is to reconstruct the Underground Railroad throughout Southeastern MA with a mission of highlighting stories from underrepresented and marginalized groups participating in the liberation of individuals and families escaping slavery.
It is our aim to explore unheard local narratives to create a curriculum that celebrates the diversity and resilience of Massachusetts residents involved in the fight to end slavery. It is our vision that these stories will educate and inspire future generations to continue the fight to actualize America’s declaration of the self-evident truth – all men and women are created equal. The team is currently researching local stories and designing a website to host the information we uncover. We will use this information to directly educate residents of Massachusetts and New England on the region’s unique role in the Underground Railroad by providing free online lesson plans for educators and parents that help youth learn these important stories and witness the places where past generations bravely fought to free enslaved people. By widely disseminating stories of changemakers and directing participants to the sites where the Underground Railroad operated locally, this project will combine history and hands-on learning to inspire and inform future generations. We also plan to bring the local history into schools through our current programming and school partnerships.
